Brazil visa for U.S. citizens

Yes, American travelers need a visa for eligible tourism and short business visits. The standard route is a fully online Brazil eVisa.

Since April 10, 2025, travelers using ordinary United States passports have needed a Brazilian Visitor Visa for tourism and other eligible short stays. U.S. citizens can apply for an eVisa online before departure.

Who needs the visa?

A person traveling with an ordinary U.S. passport generally needs a visa before entering Brazil as a visitor, whether arriving by air, sea or land. The eVisa is designed for eligible short visits, including tourism and qualifying business activity that does not involve local employment.

Different categories apply to work, study, residence and other long-term purposes. Diplomatic or official passports can also follow different rules.

U.S. applicant document checklist

  • a signed U.S. passport valid for the full trip, with two free visa pages;
  • a completed electronic application form;
  • a recent 2 × 2 inch passport-style photo with a white background;
  • payment of the US$80.90 official eVisa fee;
  • confirmation of a flight reservation showing arrival in and departure from Brazil; and
  • a printed bank statement showing transactions for the previous 30 days and at least US$2,000 available for travel, under the currently published consular guidance.

Business applicants may need a letter from their U.S. or Brazilian company. Additional documentation can be requested in any individual application.

Children traveling on U.S. passports

Each child needs an individual eVisa. Minor applications can require a birth certificate, copies of parent or guardian passports and notarized parental authorization, depending on who is traveling with the child.

  2. Enter passport details exactly as shown and upload the required photo and evidence.

Processing time

Consular processing may take up to 10 business days after the application is complete, verified and submitted for analysis. Corrections and missing documents can add time. The official portal recommends applying approximately two months before travel and avoiding non-refundable bookings until approval.

How long the U.S. eVisa lasts

An eVisa issued to a U.S. citizen can be valid for up to 10 years and allows multiple entries. The actual expiry date shown on the issued visa controls.

Validity is not the same as stay: the visa can cover many trips, while an eVisa traveler’s permitted presence is generally limited to up to 90 days per year. The border officer makes the final admission decision.

What to carry to Brazil

  • the same valid U.S. passport used in the eVisa application;
  • a printed copy of the approved eVisa PDF, preferably with a backup copy;
  • return or onward travel details;
  • your first accommodation address; and
  • supporting financial and trip information in case it is requested.
U.S.–Brazilian dual nationals cannot receive a Brazilian visa in a U.S. passport and should travel with appropriate Brazilian documentation.
